One of the oldest and most venerated cities in Europe is Prague. Long overlooked by many travelers who instead sought out more well known European destinations like London, Paris and Berlin, Prague is undergoing a resurgence in popularity that has been a godsend for the tourist economy there. Combine the renewed interest in the city with a strong currency, and these are heady times for this beautiful city.

There is so much to see in Prague that it is a fool’s errand to try to do everything on one visit, unless you are planning to stay for a month. With recent modernizations, Prague has become a much more contemporary European city, while still retaining all of the old beauty that it is famous for. And while the Euro may be soaring, much to the chagrin of North American travelers, this is still one of the most affordable places to travel to in Europe when compared to the rest of the continent. There are more than enough five-star hotels, restaurants and experiences in the city, but there is more than enough room for those looking to experience Prague on a tight budget.

For decades, the biggest knock on Prague was that it simply wasn’t sophisticated enough for travelers who had the extra income to see the city on a four-star basis. But that old stereotype was never really accurate, and today, it is a complete relic. From palatial hotels to breathtaking cuisine, Prague has come of age and is now on par with its contemporaries as a first class vacation destination. But while recent efforts to modernize this ancient city have flourished, if you don’t appreciate history and the amazing past that Prague has experienced, there really is no reason to visit here.  Ruins and history abound in Prague, each with their own incredible story. Tales of invasions, massacres, ruling parties coming to power only to be swept away years later flood the landscape here. Prague might be the closest thing we have to a medieval storybook come to life, with most of the key locations still standing so that curious minds from all over the globe can come and visit. If your only reason to visit Prague is to immerse yourself in a spa, you can do that anywhere. If you want to relive history, and experience a bit of history being made right in front of you, there may be no better natural theatre in the world than Prague.

What can you expect when you arrive here? Summers here are warm, not hot, with temperatures averaging out to 72 during June, July and August. Winters here are chilly, with January and December falling well below freezing on average. Obviously, late spring, summer and early fall are prime visiting times, but real bargains can be had if you plan on making a winter pilgrimage. Remember to bring your stocking cap, however.
